Mt Perry & Mystery Craters

Friday 28th January 2022

Mount Perry was once a thriving and prosperous copper mining town but today it is a tiny and quiet little settlement nestled under Mount Perry.  This little town was again in the papers as the gold used for the 2018 Melbourne Cup trophy was from this area.  A visit to the Bicentennial Museum is a must. Originally the Shire Council Chambers, it’s now a museum which has a collection of folk memorabilia including a working blacksmith’s shop, an old fire engine, historic hospital equipment, blacksmith’s forge and a restored and working three pole stamper, one of only three in Queensland.  After lunch at the Grand Hotel, it’s time to ponder how the Mystery Craters at South Kolan were formed.  Since their discovery in 1971, the origins of the 35 craters has remained the subject of controversy.  Can you solve the mystery?  Share your thoughts with fellow passengers on the journey home.
